Fine Feathered Friends

feather pouch front

I made a zippered pouch.  It started as an experiment.  It’s my first reverse applique!  I had no clue as to what I was doing, just winged it… Then the feather sat next to Betty (my beautiful sewing companion) for a month.  So one night I pulled a zipper out of my drawer of supplies, looked up a tutorial I wanted to try & sewed my little heart out.  The zipper turned out to be a vintage metal zipper, that I LOVE!!  vintage zipper copyright 1963

I just love the back of the package…

It makes me want to dress up in heels to do my housework.  I am in love with this pouch.  I’m not even sure what I am going to use it for, but I want to see it every second of my day & let no one else touch it.  When I started this experiment, I thought I might gift this to someone, but before it was finished, I knew it was never leaving my side.

(I thought I banished all the lady bugs!)

feather pouch open mouth

I used the Open Wide Zippered Pouch tutorial from Noodlehead which was oh so wonderful!  The resulting pouch is super easy to open up & dig around in.  Like I said before, I LOVE THIS POUCH!!!  The outside is Essex linen (don’t know the color), Kona Nightfall, the feather is a Joel Dewberry print, the lining is  Heather Ross, zipper end is Lotta Jansdotter.

This isn’t the only feathery project up my sleeve lately.  I also tried my hand at making a mug rug for a swap with my do. Good Stitches girls.  I made an enormous mug rug.  So perhaps it’s more like a place mat… I love this one also.  I am hoping my partner receives it & loves it & can overlook its enormous size.  Apparently I go big or go home.

feather mug rug

I used the free feather pattern by Anna Maria Horner.  I made the feather smaller but not small enough.  I also couldn’t find my brain & couldn’t for the life of me cut the feather sides correctly.  I cut a whole bunch wrong before I got it right.  So I have a few weirdo feather scraps to work with someday.  I did a little hand quilting on the feather & machine quilted the rest.  If I were to do it again, I would change some things, but overall I really like how it came out.

Pheasant

After  finishing up my 2 feather projects, I looked out my window & saw 2 pheasants hanging out in my neighbor’s yard.  How fitting.  They didn’t want to be photographed together though, so I only have 1 pheasant to show you.

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Wednesday, again!?  How can that be?!  I was exceptionally bad about “journaling” my craftiness these last 2 weeks, (yes, I missed last week because I was so busy bargain shopping!) so good luck to me remembering what I accomplished!!

Finished:

January Quilt for do. Good Stitches – I made the 12″ & 8″ stars I was supposed to make (I wasn’t being lazy, I just wanted to see what everyone else made first, so I could fill in any gaps…). Now I just have to make about 20 – 4″ stars & put the quilt together.  I am hoping to make big progress on all of that, this week.  Here is a shot of most of the blocks I have from everyone.  I can’t wait to see what this one looks like!January stars

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Wednesday again!  You know what that means, yup, garbage day.

(Did I ever tell you how I love garbage day?  My garbage man is so nice, he always smiles, honks & waves like he loves his job, he also picks up anything that might blow out of the can so I don’t have garbage all over my street.  Love him.)

Oh, yeah it’s also grocery day!

(My kids drank all the milk this morning…  grrr.  Momma is cranky without her cereal.  Can you believe I had to eat a bagel?  Too.  Much. Chewing.)

But most importantly it’s WIP Wednesday!  So here is a rundown of my crafty week.

(Did I tell you that I started a crafty journal?  Yeah, it’s really lame.  I just write the date & any crafty thing I worked on that day.  Otherwise I forget & think I get NOTHING done.  So, I have things like “sewed a button on T’s shirt” written in there.  BORING!!  It does help when I write these posts though!! 🙂 )

Finished:

Random – I took one day to organize my desk & do a whole bunch of random things…

  1. Sewed a button back on to T’s favorite dressy shirt.
  2. Hot glued a magnet back together.  (It’s been sitting in my drawer waiting for some glue for about 2 years…)
  3. Made a covered button magnet with an N on it.
  4. Made some mustaches on sticks.Mustache

I can’t tell you how good it feels to get some of those tiny projects done!  Why didn’t I just get them done earlier?!

3 drawstring bagsDrawstring bags – I made more of these bags!  (These are the last ones for a while…  I’m sure you’re sick of seeing them.)  I used Jeni’s tutorial again.  These are for my oldest son, W, & my BFF’s kids.  The bags are getting much love & plenty of use.  🙂

In Progress:

Orange trianglesOrange Triangles – I spent one evening making triangles into squares.  Yes, I’m magical.  I have a thought on how to lay these out for a quilt but might need to do some figuring first.

zig zag bastedT’s Zig-Zag Quilt – I basted & quilted this twin sized quilt for my youngest son.  Wow!  That was like wrestling an octopus, but it’s done now!  Yay! I also made the binding but still have to sew it on.

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Happy WIP Wednesday!  I didn’t have the time or motivation this week to get much done.  But here’s what I’ve been up to.

Finished:

sewing tablecutting table
New Desks – My friend & I went to IKEA & I came home with a new sewing table & cutting table!  I also found a new garbage can & a drawer insert for my Expedit bookshelf that separates my sewing area from my husband’s office.  All I need now is a new chair! (Notice the duct tape holding my chair together… nice.)  I got a new iron too!  The cord on my old one was starting to go.  I got a Black & Decker Digital Advantage.  I love it so far!

beeKnit Bee – I knit up a stuffed bee as a test for a larger project.   I just used some leftover sock yarn, so ignore the colors!!  🙂

Pajamas – My son had some footie pajamas that needed some TLC on the bottoms of the feet.  I left the holey bottoms & sewed in a layer of fleece.  I’m not sure it will last but I fixed it.  For now.  It might not last but he’s quickly growing out of them anyway!!

Swoon-along- I finished my first block!  Wow!  It’s a biggie!  (24″)  I am IN LOVE with my choice of background!  My husband asked me what I was making it for…  ummm…. me?  He thought maybe it was to sell.  Hahahahaha!!!!  No way, Jose.  This is mine!  I am  100% considering making this for my bed.  Even though the colors are all wrong for my bedroom plans.  Maybe the guest bed?  But then I’d never see it…  hmmm….  maybe just my original plan of a couch quilt.  This baby would look GORGEOUS in my family room & living room.

DSi Bag

drawstring bagMy 6 year-old got a DSi for Christmas.  Ever since, he’s been begging me to make him a bag to carry it all in.  We picked the fabric out a while ago & of course it sat there, staring at me.  On Friday, once I had the Jeep all packed up for our trip to Iowa, I took a couple of hours to put his new DSi bag together.  I used Jeni’s lined drawstring bag tutorial again.  I added some fusible fleece to the lining for some extra padding (because I know he won’t always be careful with it) & also made some pockets that fit a few DS games.

dsi bagHe also keeps a few other goodies in there too.

dsi bagI hope he will get off my back now!!

Doll Accessories

My niece turned 3 & she’s really into baby dolls.  So I made her some doll accessories.

doll bibsDoll bib tutorial here.  Mine turned out a bit small.  If I make more of these I will make them a bit larger.  My printer maybe scaled things down or something….  I also used 3 different closures for her little fingers to practice, Velcro, snap, & tie.

doll diapers and wipesDiaper tutorial here.  Wipes here.  I used knit fabric for the wipes, they are super soft!  I’m sure her dolls will appreciate that.

child's messenger bagFor the diaper bag, I used the Child’s Messenger Bag pattern from the book, One Yard Wonders.  I love how it turned out, but the velcro on the bag ended up about 2 inches too low.  So I had to remove it and fix it.

bag insideThis bag may be a little big for her yet, but I think it’s a bag she will be able to get some use out of, for a while.  I really love the green inside!

child messenger bagThis is my 6 year-old with the bag.  Looks like a good size for him!

bottomI love how the bottom is boxed!  Does anyone know what this is called?  I LOVE it!  I want to try it on a zipper pouch.

diaper bagI can’t wait to see her open this!  I hope she loves it!

Teacher Gifts

Christmas is coming faster than I can fathom.  Where has this year gone?  The first half of December was spent studying & stressing for my certification test to become a Certified Surgical Technologist again.  I was a bad girl & let my certification expire.  Oops!  Put me on the naughty list!   Luckily all my studying paid off & I passed!  So now work can call me & ask me to work anytime!  I need the money because our fridge is acting very erratic & needs to be replaced.  Also, our car (the one my husband drives to work everyday) has been having some issues, so we looked at our options & decided to get something new.  New is not something we would normally even consider, but there was a great deal we found that we couldn’t pass up.  So we are now the nervous proud new owners of a Jeep Compass.  Yikes!  I want to be super excited about it, but truth is, I’m nervous.  REALLY nervous.  We had a new vehicle once before.  It was a heartbreaking mess.  It got scratched, we couldn’t afford it, & then we had to sell it.  I LOVED that thing.  So after that experience I said I would NEVER buy a new vehicle again.  This just goes to show that things change.  I am getting used to the idea.  I will try my hardest to relax & enjoy the new Jeep.  I promise.

Moving on….  I made some stuff for the teachers who spend their days with my kids.  Wanna see?!!

fabric drawstring bag with mug rugmug rugmug rug back

This is for W’s 4th grade teacher, who happens to be a man.  W helped me pick the fabric & did a great job choosing fabrics that are masculine & well suited for a teacher!

fabric drawstring bag with mug rugmug rugmug rug back

This one is for T’s kindergarten teacher.  T helped pick the fabric & liked the animal one because it had a zebra on it (their school mascot).

I used this fabric bag tutorial which was great!  I plan to make more!  The coaster/place mat thing is called a mug rug.  It’s like a big coaster to put your cup of coffee on, with enough room for your snack.  Because really, what’s coffee or tea without a snack?  I also included some chocolates, dry erase markers, post-it notes, peppermint hot cocoa, & a box of my favorite tea (Good Earth Original, YUM!!!).  The boys really have wonderful teachers this year.  I hope they enjoy their treats!

I’ve also been working on my niece’s stocking.  I’m close to being done!  It WILL be done by Christmas.  Yesterday while I worked on it, T wanted to help.  So I made him a little quilt sandwich, let him dig through my tiny scraps & let him pick some pieces & lay them out to make a ticker tape quilt for his stuffed skeleton (named Bones!  Cute, right?).  I still have to sew the pieces on but this is what he did…

ticker tape quiltI love that most of the fabrics he picked are blue & green, he was SUPER excited to find the owls, & he loved the overlapping, craziness he created.  I want to straighten it all up & make it neat, but I will resist the urge & sew it together like this.  Because he loves it.  He can’t wait for Bones to have his very own quilt.

Happy Holidays!
