Excuses.

Hi!  It has been SO long since I blogged!  Sorry!  I really didn’t mean to be away so long.  I do have a few excuses….

It started in March… I sprained my ankle REALLY bad while cross-country skiing with my family.  That was an emotional blow for some reason & that knocked me into a deep depression.  I sat on the couch for a month too depressed to do anything & when I started to think about ways to die, I made an appointment with a doctor.  While doctoring for that depression my doctors & I came to the conclusion that I have Bipolar II.  I was relieved to start on some medicine to help but scared of what Bipolar would mean for me & my family.  Then I realized I have been dealing with it all along, I just didn’t realize it wasn’t normal.  Getting on some meds would probably only  help and make family life better.  After finding the right medication & the right dose, I am back to my normal-but-better-balanced self.  I am much more even-tempered, less moody, and my anxiety is usually WAY better.  The most wonderful thing is that my medicine allows me to sleep normally for the first time, maybe ever!

(Bipolar disorder is simply a type of mood disorder that cycles between periods of depression and periods of hypomania or mania (elevated mood).  Moods are both high & low, people with Bipolar disorder are more of a danger to themselves than to anyone else & with the right medication moods can be controlled.  The II of Bipolar II means that I have the form with less severe manic periods, Bipolar I has more severe manic phases where people do more outlandish things like go on major spending sprees.  However, people with Bipolar II are at a higher risk of committing suicide (30% I read somewhere!) so it is still very serious & very scary.)

I haven’t talked about my diagnosis with very many people because people don’t understand what it means.  There is a horrible stigma.  People imagine a very chaotic and messed up life when they think of Bipolar disorder and that is not my reality, so I haven’t brought it up to very many people.  No one would guess I have a problem because it normally doesn’t affect my life in ways people on the outside see.

My main problems are/were:

1) periods of depression: varying from feeling down, to feeling like death would bring sweet release if it just didn’t take so much energy to make happen (scary but it’s the truth.)

2) periods of hypomania: where my brain won’t stop & I start too many projects & plan too many things & I can’t stop talking & I might as well stay up till 3 AM because I just want to get my project done!

3) anxiety: panic attacks preventing me from doing the things I want to do, like going to church, or grocery shopping or even hanging out with my friends.

4) insomnia: all of these symptoms were preventing me from sleeping so I was having trouble falling asleep and waking up a million times a night if I did fall asleep.

By Fall I was thinking clearly again so I decided to go back to college!  Fall semester I took a full load of 16 credits and got straight A’s!  Yay me!  But it was tons of work and a crazy schedule so there was no chance for me to do ANYTHING crafty, bloggy, or fun…

During my Christmas break I  was able to do a little crafting & made a bunch of drawstring pouches, a couple zipper pouches & knit a bunch of dish cloths.  Sorry I don’t have pictures of everything.

Leftover dish cloths 🙂

I head back to school on Monday with another full load of 15 credits so I will probably not be around here all that much until summer, but I am so looking forward to summer & crafting & blogging a little more!  I have a couple of quilts I want to finish by springtime & a bunch of other random sewing I want to do.  I have decided to keep my project list short and give myself few deadlines so I don’t stress over my lack of progress on my crafts.

Quilt tops to work on…

I’m hoping to turn the stack below into a beautiful something for my oldest niece who is graduating from high school this spring!

I hope you have a wonderful day and get lots of crafting done this winter!

XOXO,

March

March around here has been a blur of cold weather, too much snow, a sprained ankle, so many scouting activities, & hoping with all my heart that a real spring & summer is on its way.  I am ready for the snow to melt, no longer needing heavy jackets, &  more sunshine!!

March blocks These are my March blocks for do. Good Stitches (Peace Circle).  We used a tutorial found here.  This quilt will be really interesting with all the different solid colors.  I am excited to see it!

January log cabin quilt

The top for my January quilt is done!   It’s been hanging on my desk waiting for me to go through my batting to see if I can find a piece large enough to use on this quilt.  I am in love with the on point setting & the polka-dots.  This is so not the vision I had in my mind when I asked for log cabin blocks, but I am glad I let the blocks work themselves into this setting & also happy that my current obsession with Navy was a good fit for this quilt.

Cat in shoes

Sox has been especially adorable lately.

Cat in plant

What a goofball!

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter!  My kids are home this week & I have been loving them up.  My house is TRASHED & LOUD but those are signs of a happy home.  (That’s what I keep telling myself anyway!)

XOXO, Naomi

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Happy Wednesday!  The biggest thing I have been working on lately, is a big, fat, crab-a$$ attitude.  Not sure why.  I want to be positive & happy, productive & inspired.  Instead, I am negative, crabby, unproductive, & REALLY uninspired.  ANYTHING sets me off, for example…

At the gym on Monday… Ugh.  The class schedule has changed for the millionth time in the last year.  The changes in the past have been lousy, (my favorite TurboKick instructor quit due to management issues, class times have changed, teachers have come & gone…) but last week my favorite class was removed from the schedule.  Yes, removed.  It was replaced with a class that is kind-of similar, but not really that fun, plus the instructor is one of the most irritating, condescending people at the gym.  She is so irritating to me that I dread the thought of being in the same room with her (if you know me at all, you would know that I can put up with most people, it’s hard to be so annoying I wouldn’t want to be in the same room). Anyway, I thought I would try the class, try to be open-minded, besides my BFF took the class the week before & thought it was good.  5 minutes into the class I wanted to scream.  She was teaching everything backwards, saying left, but doing right.  It was the most difficult class I have ever taken because I could not follow her!  I must have been unable to hide my frustration because she called me out & had me go front & center so I could “see better”.  Again, if you know me at all, you would know that I am not the kind of girl who goes front & center in front of everyone, especially when I haven’t the foggiest as to what I am supposed to be doing, so being called out in front of everyone was extremely fun for me.  She then spent the rest of the class pointing out everything I was doing wrong.  I should have walked out.  I wish I would have.  But I was trying to be polite & keep trying.  Halfway through the class, I decided all my punches should be directed to her face, that made the class worth-while.  🙂  When I got home from the gym, I sent a message to the management about my disappointment about the schedule changes.  I hope they change something, or I am quitting.

Sorry!  I got all mad all over again!  Normally I would have let all that roll off & it wouldn’t have bothered me.  I definitely wouldn’t have emailed anyone about it!!  So what’s up with my crab-a$$ attitude??  It’s really ticking me off!  🙂

So here is the very small amount I have accomplished lately…

Finished:

organized fabric

Fabric Organization – I finished this up a little while ago, but haven’t had a chance to show it off.  I used comic book boards (found them on Amazon) to make mini-bolts out of my fabric!  I LOVE & ADORE how neat all my fabric is now!  (Well except that I ran out of boards, so my solids & linen aren’t neat & tidy yet…)

January Quilt for do. Good Stitches – Very close to being a finish!  I just need to hand sew the binding on.  One good TV watching evening should do it!

WIP Wednesday 2.29.2012

Hello again, friends!

Before we start this WIP Wednesday post, let me show you something exciting!

Snow day

WE GOT SNOW!!  Normally I wouldn’t be so excited about snow, but it has been a mostly snow-less winter here in my part of Minnesota.  Major disappointment!  Last night during dinner, it started to rain, then it quickly turned into sleet.  By the time we went to bed, we had maybe 1 inch of snow.  This morning I was awoken by the phone ringing with a recorded message from the school district saying that school was cancelled!  When I went outside to feed the cat, I had to put boots on!  (This is shocking because all winter my kids have been feeding the cat in their bare feet or socks & hanging out with him on the front step & beyond.) We probably got a good 6 inches of snow & it is still coming down!!  I called my husband so he could explain how to use the snow-blower & I cleared the driveway!  I usually just shovel, but this snow is HEAVY!  I wasn’t sure my husband would even be able to get in the driveway when he got home, so I figured I better just bite the bullet.  It was actually pretty fun!  Anyway, I will be enjoying this snow day playing games with the kids & hopefully doing a little sewing!  What are you going to do?

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

(Let me apologize for the radio silence for the last 2 weeks…Sorry!  Life kind of got busy & I made the decision to live my life & enjoy it, instead of stressing about getting a blog post written.  That’s okay, right?! 🙂 )

I have almost nothing to show for my long break.  But by showing you all almost nothing, I am hoping I get motivated to accomplish something to show you next week!

Finished:

Webelos Patch – Yeah, I know, totally boring… I got W’s Webelos patch sewed onto his Cub Scout uniform.  He’s only had it since December…

In Progress:

stars

January Quilt for do. Good Stitches –  Last time I talked about this quilt I said,  “I am hoping to make big progress on all of that, this week.”  …

I made a little progress, but no BIG progress.  I’m trimming the star points & the next step is putting all 20 – 4″ blocks together!  So, I am close!  I find trimming to be mind-numbingly boring, so I set up a little lap table to cut on while I watch TV.  As long as I don’t get distracted & cut wrong, it works pretty well!  My goal is to finish this quilt by March 15th.  (There, I said it, so now I have to do it, right?)

Wednesday, again!?  How can that be?!  I was exceptionally bad about “journaling” my craftiness these last 2 weeks, (yes, I missed last week because I was so busy bargain shopping!) so good luck to me remembering what I accomplished!!

Finished:

(This block is the 12″ block.  Using Lee’s Ribbon Star tutorial.)

January Quilt for do. Good Stitches – I made the 12″ & 8″ stars I was supposed to make (I wasn’t being lazy, I just wanted to see what everyone else made first, so I could fill in any gaps…). Now I just have to make about 20 – 4″ stars & put the quilt together.  I am hoping to make big progress on all of that, this week.  Here is a shot of most of the blocks I have from everyone.  I can’t wait to see what this one looks like!January stars

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Wednesday again!  You know what that means, yup, garbage day.

(Did I ever tell you how I love garbage day?  My garbage man is so nice, he always smiles, honks & waves like he loves his job, he also picks up anything that might blow out of the can so I don’t have garbage all over my street.  Love him.)

Oh, yeah it’s also grocery day!

(My kids drank all the milk this morning…  grrr.  Momma is cranky without her cereal.  Can you believe I had to eat a bagel?  Too.  Much. Chewing.)

But most importantly it’s WIP Wednesday!  So here is a rundown of my crafty week.

(Did I tell you that I started a crafty journal?  Yeah, it’s really lame.  I just write the date & any crafty thing I worked on that day.  Otherwise I forget & think I get NOTHING done.  So, I have things like “sewed a button on T’s shirt” written in there.  BORING!!  It does help when I write these posts though!! 🙂 )

Finished:

Random – I took one day to organize my desk & do a whole bunch of random things…

  1. Sewed a button back on to T’s favorite dressy shirt.
  2. Hot glued a magnet back together.  (It’s been sitting in my drawer waiting for some glue for about 2 years…)
  3. Made a covered button magnet with an N on it.
  4. Made some mustaches on sticks.Mustache

I can’t tell you how good it feels to get some of those tiny projects done!  Why didn’t I just get them done earlier?!

3 drawstring bagsDrawstring bags – I made more of these bags!  (These are the last ones for a while…  I’m sure you’re sick of seeing them.)  I used Jeni’s tutorial again.  These are for my oldest son, W, & my BFF’s kids.  The bags are getting much love & plenty of use.  🙂

In Progress:

Orange trianglesOrange Triangles – I spent one evening making triangles into squares.  Yes, I’m magical.  I have a thought on how to lay these out for a quilt but might need to do some figuring first.

zig zag bastedT’s Zig-Zag Quilt – I basted & quilted this twin sized quilt for my youngest son.  Wow!  That was like wrestling an octopus, but it’s done now!  Yay! I also made the binding but still have to sew it on.

It’s a new year.

I will finish some of these darn unfinished objects (UFOs) that are haunting me.  Then I will never let it get this bad again!!

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Happy WIP Wednesday!  I didn’t have the time or motivation this week to get much done.  But here’s what I’ve been up to.

Finished:

sewing tablecutting table
New Desks – My friend & I went to IKEA & I came home with a new sewing table & cutting table!  I also found a new garbage can & a drawer insert for my Expedit bookshelf that separates my sewing area from my husband’s office.  All I need now is a new chair! (Notice the duct tape holding my chair together… nice.)  I got a new iron too!  The cord on my old one was starting to go.  I got a Black & Decker Digital Advantage.  I love it so far!

beeKnit Bee – I knit up a stuffed bee as a test for a larger project.   I just used some leftover sock yarn, so ignore the colors!!  🙂

Pajamas – My son had some footie pajamas that needed some TLC on the bottoms of the feet.  I left the holey bottoms & sewed in a layer of fleece.  I’m not sure it will last but I fixed it.  For now.  It might not last but he’s quickly growing out of them anyway!!

Swoon-along- I finished my first block!  Wow!  It’s a biggie!  (24″)  I am IN LOVE with my choice of background!  My husband asked me what I was making it for…  ummm…. me?  He thought maybe it was to sell.  Hahahahaha!!!!  No way, Jose.  This is mine!  I am  100% considering making this for my bed.  Even though the colors are all wrong for my bedroom plans.  Maybe the guest bed?  But then I’d never see it…  hmmm….  maybe just my original plan of a couch quilt.  This baby would look GORGEOUS in my family room & living room.

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

Wow… this week went fast.  My 6 year-old has been sick since Sunday, so I suppose that’s where most of that time has gone.  I have found only small bits here & there to sew.  I am hoping this week holds more quality time for Betty & me.  (I have decided my sewing machine’s name is Betty.  She works hard, she’s a sweaty Betty.)  So, here is this week’s list…

Finished:

December do. Good Stitches blocks- Last week I had one done, I finished the second one & got them sent off this week!

In Progress:

Christmas Quilt- 12 blocks finished this week! 16 blocks left!

new deskNew desk-  Excuse the mess!  I went to some shops in my small town & found this desk for a reasonable price.  I am so happy to have my laptop off my cutting table!  I haven’t gotten it all organized yet because the drawers smell yucky & I don’t want to put anything in them until I get rid of the smell.  Any ideas??  I have wiped them out & have baking soda sitting in them right now.

doll bibs, diapers, and diaper bagDoll accessories for L’s Birthday-  My niece turned 3 this week!  I have decided to make her some doll accessories.  I am making a diaper bag from the Child’s Messenger Bag pattern from One Yard Wonders, bibs from this tutorial, & diapers from this tutorial.  I really hope she loves & uses the things I am making for her!

swoon fabric options

swoon fabricFabrics for Swoon-along-  I joined a quilt along.  I didn’t mean to, I just HAD to!  It’s the Swoon-along .  I mean, how could I resist? I had the idea to use Heath (the black cross hatched fabric) for the background.  Now I can’t give it up.  I LOVE the idea!  I just haven’t figured out what else to use… (I chose the bottom pile in the dark one night while we were watching a movie…  I think I might love it!)
